At our summer science camp in the Sierra Nevada, mentors help the children learn science by “doing,” i.e., helping them ask the questions, make the observations, and figure out how it all fits together not by being told, but through guided self-discovery. Mentors also help the kids work on projects that bring together different aspects of Sierra Nevadan ecosystem: botany (plants), mammalogy (chipmunks, bats, deer), entomology (bugs), herpetology (reptiles, amphibians), ornithology (birds), ichthyology (fish), limnology (lakes), geology (rocks), and archaeology (how humans interacted with the nature in the past). Mentors work in teams of two with the same small group of kids throughout the program and each day, rotate through a different teacher’s or scientist’s program. Because the mentors work with the same group of kids for the entire 9-day session, you are an important bridge between the kids and the instructors. You have a chance in Youth in Science to make a real difference in the lives of these kids at a critical time in their intellectual and emotional development. They will look to you for guidance and friendship. As in everything, the more you give, the more you get – they can change your lives, too! |
