Science 210: Integrative Science in the Outdoor Classroom (3 units)

Join us this summer at Sequoia Lake near Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks for this innovative course. “Integrative Science in the Outdoor Classroom” is for science educators who are interested in 1) teaching science content (e.g., botany, zoology, entomology, etc.) within context (i.e., the ecosystem of the Sierra Nevada); 2) the use of hands on, inquiry-based approaches to problem solving and critical thinking, etc.); and 3) developing course materials and lesson plans that integrate science literacy benchmarks and the California Science Content Standards. “Integrative Science in the Outdoor Classroom” will be team-taught by SJSU professors, scientists, and science educators in conjunction with SJSU’s “Youth in Science” program. “Youth in Science” is a science camp for gifted 5th, 6th, and 7th graders from low income families in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Science 210 is open to pre-service science credential students, in-service teachers, and graduate students. Science 210 students will be evaluated on the basis of participation and the development of course materials for use in their classrooms or programs. Science 210 is a graded, graduate-level course that may, with your advisor’s approval, be used toward the M.A. in Natural Science or MA Education (Elementary Education with Science and Technology emphasis) degrees at San Jose State. In addition, this course may be suitable for professional continuing education credit (check with your district and/or employer).

Sequoia Lake will serve as our outdoor classroom for this adventure in education. Sequoia Lake is approximately 50 miles east of Fresno at an elevation of 5300 ft. in the Sierra Nevada. Giant sequoias, miles of scenic trails, and a tranquil lake provide a unique setting for studying nature and science. Our host is the Central Valley YMCA, which owns and operates Sequoia Lake. The camp has electricity and running water (flush toilets and hot showers). Sleeping accommodations include cabins that sleep 6-8. Meal service includes three great meals a day in the camp’s dining hall.

In addition to course registration fees for summer session, there is a fee of $275 for lodging and meals for 8 days at Sequoia Lake. We anticipate that scholarships will be available to offset course registration and food/lodging fees. Contact Dr. Elizabeth McGee at 408/924-5277 for additional information.
