Coyote Point Museum

by Sue Pound

Coyote Point Museum is located south of San Francisco International airport just off 101 (Dore Ave exit). Access to the museum from 101 is well sign-posted. The museum offers a wealth of educationa l experiences for all ages. Of particular attraction is the live animal exhibit which includes bobcats, badgers, otters, and snakes. Surrounding the enclosures are areas of well landscaped gardens with particular themes in mind (e.g. butterfly garden, riparian community).

The museum has a large exhibit hall that has dioramas, hands-on activities, and comprehensive descriptions of the major San Francisco Bay Area ecosystems. There is a lot of reading and detail that would suit older grades, but t he displays themselves provide plenty of visual and manipulative activities that would appeal to the younger visitor.

Coyote Point Museum is best suited to families and children aged up to 12 years. However the museum is hoping to expand upward i n its appeal. The museum offers docent-led tours as well as providing special programs both in the museum and at your site. Tours at the museum can take about one and a half hours with a must-stop at the museum shop that holds many inexpensive items sui table for the interested young buyer. There are no food facilities at the museum but Coyote Point Reserve provides a variety of picnic and playground options, many with a view of the bay.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10.00 a m to 5.00 pm, and Sundays 12.00 to 5.00 pm. Admission for Adults is $3.00, Seniors and Students $2.00, and Children aged 4-12 is $1.00.
