Emma Prusch Farm Park

by Tanya Kurosky
Emma Prush Farm Park is a wonderful oasis in the eastern part of the city of San Jose. It is located very near the intersection of the 280 and the 101 freeways. The park is a holdover from a time when the entire area was agricultural land. It maintains this agricultural feel, as it is home to farm animals, fruit orchards, and two community gardens. In addition, there is a meeting room with a kitchen which can be rented out, lots of picnic tables and barbecue pits, and a huge, well- cared for lawn. The gardens consist of plots that are given (rented?) to members of the community to care for.

What is there for kids? The animals are interesting. There is a large fenced- in area with about 50-100 birds: turkeys, chickens, quail, peacocks, and many others. You can walk in among the birds. The park also houses a number of large farm animals - cows, sheep, and pigs - that are cared for by 4-H club members. This part of the park would make a terrific afternoon outing for young kids to see the farm animals, have a picnic lunch and play on the lawn.

The park office number is (408)926-5555. Entrance is free. To get there, take the King Rd. exit from the 280/680 south. Go 1/4 block, and turn right into the entrance.
