We currently offer several courses in radiation safety.
Radiation Safety training is offered for radiation workers in a general laboratory
environment who have no background handling
radiation sources. This is two unit course that provides classroom and
laboratory activities. The course is offered in the fall and spring as Nuclear
Science 121S (Nucs-121S), Chemistry 121S (Chem-121S) or Physics 121S
(Phys-121S). The course is routinely scheduled on Friday afternoons from 1 pm to
3:20 pm.
If you complete the course with a grade of "B" or better you receive
certificate of training. The course provides at least 40 hours of training and
instruction.
Refresher training for radiation workers. This training is required for
radiation workers every year if they continue to work
with radiation sources. This is a regulatory constraint. The training is
coordinated through the Radiation Safety officer.
1st Responder Training. This training is being developed to provide
instruction to individuals
who are assigned the responsibility of responding to emergencies where radiation
sources are involved.
Access to the Nuclear Science Facility. The
facility is a secured location that is monitored 24/7. Anyone who needs access to the
Nuclear Science facility on a regular basis must have basic instruction on
safety and be shown where the hazards are located in the facility. Contact the
Radiation Safety Officer for this training. After completing the training
the Radiation Safety Officer will provide you with the access codes for the
facility.
